Trenches

In the trenches
as rain starts to fall
I look up to the sky
and hear my sergeant call
"Morters!"
the unforgettable whistle
heard over head
I shot a look to the north,
my heart filled with dread

Hundreds of them
coming over the top
gas bombs exploding
spewing dedly rot
I hear a blood-curdling scream
"I don't want to die!"
I feel a sharp pain in my stomach
surprised the voice was mine

I vomit blood and slam into the mud
squinting at my hands, I see blood
My sergeant opens his mouth and fills my head with lies
"Don't worry soldier, your going to be all right"
shot in the temple, blank stare on his face
he slowly tumbles on the ground
gentle as lace

I fall asleep, as my company runs
waking up, almost my final breath
I give my final plea to God
"Please God
